Hi, I’m Jill,
a writer, reader, and teacher
I wanted to create a blog specifically for me to talk about what I'm reading, since I complain about everything else through my newsletter. This is also a space that I'd like to be able to use as a sample of what my students might consider doing when creating websites in class, so that they have an idea of how built-out their own blogs might be.

A more extensive version of my biography can be read on my portfolio site, where I've made a catalog of most of my published writing. (The couple of books I self-published in college to pay for my classes didn't make the cut.)

As a reader, I'm an omnivore, and in general, I will try anything once (this is also my philosophy of eating). To get an idea of what I read, check out the book log where I've listed out and provided ratings for the majority of books I have read since 2019. Nature writing and cultural criticism tend to make up the bulk of what I read these days, but there are still novels and short story collections in there, too.

Some favorite authors include:
-
Terry Tempest Williams
-
Italo Calvino
-
Karen Russell
-
Ruth Ozeki
-
Rebecca Solnit
-
Susan Sontag
-
Ernest Hemingway

And some authors I keep reading despite not really or loving what they've written:
-
Grady Hendrix
-
Otessa Moshfegh
-
Stephen King

My past employment has included being a library page and a bookseller, and I frequently present my own writing on literature and media at the Northeastern Modern Language Association and Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association's national conferences. Books have always been and likely will always be a part of my professional life.
